Introduction:

Gnomes were asked to do some turfing and fencing work for an existing customer that they do fortnightly garden maintenance for including lawn mowing, maintaining flower beds, pruning, hedge cutting and keeping the garden tidy.

Project:

The customer asked Gnomes to clear a flower bed in the middle of a lawn and turf it. They were also asked to extend the height of the fences and gates around the garden by two feet using trellising to make it dog friendly.

Solution:

They started by clearing the flower bed, digging out all of the flowers, shrubs and ground cover so it was back to bare soil. Gnomes began to level the area using 2 tonnes of Root Zone, which is a soil and sand mix that is lighter to work with, warms up quickly and drains very well. Lawns grow best when laid on well-drained soil. Once level to the surrounding lawn, they compacted the area lightly, added more Root Zone, levelled it again and then the surface was raked to a fine tilth.

After levelling the area they left it for a week to settle then Gnomes levelled any sections that needed it, raked the surface to a fine tilth again and began laying the turf.

Once the lawn was laid, Gnomes cleaned the area and left it tidy. 9 weeks later they gave the new turf its first cut so that the turf had time to root and started growing.

Gnomes then turned their attention to extending the fencing.

Firstly, they replaced the damaged fence posts with new 6-foot wooden posts and postcrete so they had a solid foundation to add the trellis too for the extra height that the customer wanted. The original wooden posts, that weren’t damaged, were extended by two feet using wooden posts secured with brackets. Once all the posts were the same height Gnomes placed the trellises on top of the fence panels, lifted them by 2 inches and screwed them into the posts.

Once the fences were extended, Gnomes increased the height of the gates using the same trellises and batons to give them strength.

B&Q supplied the wooden posts and postcrete and Home and Garden Bishopswood supplied the trellis, Gnomes were impressed with the products and customer service at both suppliers.

Turfing Process:
